Open Doors In Need of Temporary Shelter Location

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Yesterday (10.22.2024), a challenging and newly presented construction problem with the Navigation Center was confirmed. This unexpected problem was only recently discovered. It relates to fireproofing, which out of life-safety necessity must be resolved before the building can be approved for occupancy.  The time required to remedy this issue will cause Nielsen and its partners to miss its contractual October 30th completion date and will further delay the building's opening.

Nielsen Builders will be working expeditiously to fix the fireproofing, as they understand the critical nature of the shelter program.

Open Doors and the City have already begun exploring temporary shelter alternatives for the interim. Finding a temporary shelter site is an urgent need, and we encourage people to reach out to Nate Riddle at the information included if they have a space available that might serve as a fixed shelter site for the time being. We are open to considering any partnerships with entities with an empty building or underutilized space that could serve as a temporary fixed shelter site for 20-40 beds beginning in November. Unfortunately, some options have already been deemed not feasible. We are committed to doing all that we can to deliver the vital life-saving services that thermal shelter is. More information will be shared as it is available.
