Two of Rockingham County’s cherished Civil War landmarks received a much-needed refresh.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Harrisonburg, VA – January 2025 – Just before Thanksgiving, two of Rockingham County’s cherished Civil War landmarks received a much-needed refresh, solidifying the area as a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts and travelers. This exciting update was made possible by a partnership between Rockingham County Economic Development and Tourism, Civil War Trails, Inc., the Virginia Tourism Corporation, the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Chamber of Commerce, the Town of Bridgewater, and the Cross Keys Ruritan Club.
The Civil War Trails sites in Bridgewater and Cross Keys have been enhanced with updated content and relocated to improve accessibility for visitors. These upgrades address common questions from past guests, incorporate fresh insights from new historical research, and include improved wayfinding to guide travelers to nearby attractions. Additionally, Melrose Caverns has recently joined the multi-state Civil War Trails program, further expanding Rockingham’s historical network.
“These updates will elevate the Shenandoah Valley’s historical appeal, offering visitors even more reasons to explore and return,” said Josh Gooden, Deputy Director of Economic Development and Tourism for Rockingham County. “By enhancing their experiences, we aim to extend stays, encourage repeat visits, and support the growth of our local economy.”
The project was met with enthusiasm by community leaders. Neil Sacra, President of the Cross Keys Ruritan Club, emphasized the significance of preserving history while contributing to the local economy. “This effort aligns perfectly with our mission to instill a sense of history and patriotism,” he said. Gwen Gottfied from the Town of Bridgewater echoed the sentiment, noting, “The Town appreciates Civil War Trails’ dedication to enhancing these historical markers for the benefit of both travelers and residents.”
Economic Impact of Civil War Tourism
The Civil War Trails program plays a vital role in supporting the region’s economy. Last year, nearly 200,000 map-guides were distributed—an impressive 60,000 more than the previous year. These guides, paired with digital marketing efforts, attract visitors who stay an average of 3-4 nights and spend approximately $1,300 per trip. These tourism dollars directly benefit local businesses and contribute to Rockingham County’s tax base.
