DIRECTOR OF COMMUNITY IMPACT
ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY
United Way of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County is improving lives by connecting and mobilizing community resources. We envision a strong, equitable, and accessible network of support for working households in Harrisonburg and Rockingham County.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Director of Community Impact serves as the primary lead on United Way’s community impact work. Creating change within the community, they will establish measurable impact strategies that reflect community needs and drive equitable outcomes.
In April of 2025, UWHR announced an expansion that will include the areas of Staunton, Augusta County, and Waynesboro into their service area. This position will lead efforts on a listening campaign to better understand the needs of the entire region, working towards building a shared vision for the Central Shenandoah Valley.
AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
Community Impact
- Build and manage partnerships that advance the community impact work of United Way
- Represent United Way on community coalitions relevant to focus areas of work
- Drive community education around ALICE, the ALICE Report and supplemental data, supported where appropriate by the Director of Development and President & CEO
- Provide oversight and direction for the Community Impact Committee, including the development, implementation, and assessment of an impact agenda
- Research best practices and trends in Community Impact work across United Way Network and other relevant resources
Advocacy
- Work with Executive Director to identify areas for advocacy for both the organization and the ALICE Coalition to determine local, state and federal policies that impact ALICE
- Assist with development of Public Policy Committee
Program Oversight
- Provide direction and oversight to Program Manager for Financial Wellness at Work program
- Analyze community-level data collected and overall usage of resource and referral software
- Identify prospective partners and connect new users to resource & referral software including Unite Us and 2-1-1
- Encourage local community organizations to update and maintain information in resource and referral platforms such as United Us and 2-1-1
Community Impact Grants and Support
- Coordinate all aspects of grant review process including:
- Recruit and train volunteers to review grant applications
- Manage all aspects of grant application
- Provide technical assistance to applicants
- Manage communication with community partners receiving grant funding from United Way
- Facilitate annual site visits to organizations receiving grant funding
- Convene and host regular meetings of the Community Impact Committee
- Convene and host regular meetings with funded partner organizations
Events and Volunteer Coordination
- Tools for School – assist with development of back-to-school event, including a community resource fair and school supply distribution; coordinate annual school supply drive with local school systems and education foundations
- Day of Action – coordinate projects – set-up, volunteer placement and needed supplies
- Collaborate with Director of Development to match volunteers with appropriate projects
- ALICE Awareness Week – working with other members of the staff
- Provide content and strategy for this educational awareness campaign
- Greatest Needs Drive – coordinate annual drive
- Experience working with a diverse group of stakeholders from the nonprofit and business community, with a genuine commitment to inclusivity
- Experience managing and recruiting volunteers
- Strong interpersonal communication and multi-tasking skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Organizational and time management skills
- Understanding of and desire to learn more about the Harrisonburg and Rockingham County community
- Experience with group presentations, providing training and technical assistance
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite

FLSA: Exempt
Position Type: Full Time
JOB REQUIREMENTS
- Must be available for evening and weekend hours as required to support events
- Must have valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle
- Must be able to communicate effectively in English
COMPENSATION
Salary Range: $55,000-$62,000
