The Elbow Room: Harrisonburg's Legendary Music Venue
In the late 1970s and early '80s, The Elbow Room and its sister venue, The Other Place, opened the gateway in Harrisonburg to quality, nationally-recognized music acts, primarily blues. These venues became legendary on the touring circuit known as “From Boston to Austin” and became much desired by musicians who found the management and the audience enthusiastic for their fine music.
Artists such as Stevie Ray Vaughn, The Nighthawks, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Catfish Hodge, Jamie Brockett, Albert Collins, The Allstars, Skip Castro, Son Seals, Sunnyland Slim, Bob Margolin, and many others played in these local venues on their way to national fame and fortune.Local musician Bobby Driver tells the story of this magical time in Harrisonburg’s music history.
